In ninth grade at Porter’s, you’ll explore our programs, challenge yourself and try new things. Faculty advisors will help you map out your academic goals and chart your path forward for the next four years. While engaging deeply with the broader Porter’s community, you’ll begin taking advantage of academic and co-curricular opportunities and start investigating where your passions lie.
By 10th grade, you’ll connect with a dedicated college advisor who will help you identify your interests and open your mind to different opportunities. In addition to deepening your knowledge, they’ll direct you toward coursework and co-curriculars that sharpen and expand your existing strengths and talents. You’ll also take practice college admission tests and tap into resources that help you better understand your options and start considering what you’re looking for in a college education.
As you dig deeper into your college search, you and your family will collaborate with the College Office to focus on future goals, interests and values, and ensure they align with your preliminary list of colleges. You’ll develop individual testing plans, take the ACT and/or SAT exams, visit schools, and meet with college admissions counselors who come to campus.
By the summer, you’ll have narrowed your list of best-fit colleges, drafted your essays and secured recommendation letters. You’ll also have begun researching merit and academic scholarships. Most important, you’ll have a road map for the upcoming application process, and you’ll be ready to make the most of your final year at Porter’s.
The College Office will provide support and engagement throughout your senior year as you move through the final stages of the college application and decision-making process. In the fall, you’ll have the chance to meet with representatives who visit Porter’s from more than 100 colleges and universities..
As application deadlines approach, you’ll complete college and financial aid applications and finalize essays and any other supplementary materials. Your college advisor will help you strategically think through early and regular decision timelines to ensure all your applications are submitted in an effective and timely manner. Once your applications are submitted, you’ll work with the College Office to prepare for any admissions interviews. And after you’ve received your acceptance letters, your advisor will help you evaluate your offers and make a final decision.
